Plot summary : Qi Tianyuan is a former Wu Dang student whose present occupation as a governor's strong man leads him to be sent to Shaolin Temple in disguise as a monk. His mission is to take over as abbot and procure a ceremonial robe. Not surprisingly, the Shaolin monks resist this upstart's demands and a vicious battle ensues, resulting in the deaths or incarceration of many monks. Several young monks attempt to transport the robe to a neighboring temple. One of them is Hui Neng whose failed attempt to stall their pursuers leads him to seek refuge with the Yin family of horse breeders he had met once before. Yin Ling, one of the daughters who has fallen in love with Hui joins him in training among the Wu Dang clan who were traditionally rivals of Shaolin, but now share a common enemy. Meanwhile, Qi Tianyuan recovers the robe from the remaining monks in flight and sets a trap for Hui Neng, who he is determined to defeat. Joined by Yin's fighting daughters, several Wu Dang fighters and the monks he set free, Hui Neng mounts a final struggle to reclaim Shaolin and the Holy Robe..

Plot summary : In the spring of 1942, following the blockade run that took General Douglas MacArthur and his staff from the Philippines to the safety of Australia, the survivors of a bombed and sunk PT boat make their way to shore. The skipper tells his men they have top priority passes if they can make their way to Del Monte airfield two hundred miles away, and advises them to split up into pairs. Ensign Chuck Palmer and crewman Jim Mitchell finally reach Tacloban on the island of Leyte. In an American mission school, Palmer meets Jeanne Martinez, who is urgently trying to see the officer in charge with a request for help for a relative, and he also learns that the Japanese have captured the airfield. Palmer tries to make Australia by a boat that sinks in a tropical storm, and has to swim for shore. All through 1942, Palmer and the other survivors dodge enemy patrols while living off the land.

Plot summary : In the winter of 1868, Eben Frost goes to a Boston pawnshop and redeems a silver medal, inscribed to "Dr. W.T.G. Morton, the Benefactor of Mankind, with the Gratitude of Humanity." Frost drives to a country farmhouse and gives the medal to Morton's widow, Elizabeth Morton who explains to her daughter, Betty, that Frost was the first person given anesthesia by her father, Boston dentist Dr. W.T.G. Morton. The story flashes back 20 years to find Morton being wildly acclaimed by medical students as the man whose discovery of "letheon" had forever ended pain as, before that day, even amputations were performed with the patient fully conscious. "Letheron", unknown to everybody but Morton and Elizabeth, is simply highly rectified sulfuric ether - cleaning fluid - easily obtainable at a pharmacy. By keeping the secret, Dr. Morton could be rich, but he had rather be poor than see a girl strapped to an operating table under the knife of Dr. Warren, and he reveals his secret to a group of surgeons in the hospital operating theatre. With his secret out, and all hope of personal reward gone, with the possible exception of proceeds from his glass inhaler, he gets the news that Congress has voted him a reward of $100,000, and also learns that the patent on his inhaler has been infringed. President Pierce, under pressure from newspapers inflamed by jealous medical rivals of Morton, refuses to sign the bill until Morton has proven patient infringement.
